The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Neil Gaiman.
Good reads choice 2013 winner, The Ocean at the End of the Lane is set in Sussex, England where a middle aged man returns to his childhood home to attend a funeral. He is drawn to a farm located at the end of the road and is reminded of Lettie, a girl he met there when he was seven. Memories come flooding back of a strange, frightening and dangerous past, sparked by a suicide forty years earlier, when the darkness is unleashed and that little boy comes under the promised protection of Lettie - magical, comforting and wise beyond her years.
