Jasper Jones

Continuing with the theme of belonging is Jasper Jones written by Craig Silvey. Jasper Jones is the rebellious, mixed-race solitary teen, an outcast in the regional mining town of Corrigan, who recruits Charlie Bucktin's help one hot summer night in 1965. Charlie, a precocious and bookish thirteen year old, is eager to impress and follows Jasper to his secret glade where he is witness to Jasper's horrible discovery.  This novel is a candid look at a small town and the relationships and discriminations that weave amongst it's inhabitants.  Through it all Charlie carries a dark secret and is pushed and pulled by a town closing in on itself in fear and suspicion.
