August - Discovery/Journeys

Another month has arrived and we will be looking at books with the theme of discovery or journeys.
Let us know of some of your suggestions of books you can recommend within this theme.

This week's book is Questions of Travel by Michelle de Kretser. De Kretser examines the impact of travel and charts two very different lives.  Laura, who travels the world before returning to Sydney where she works for a publisher of travel guides and Ravi who dreams of being a tourist until he is driven from Sri lanka by devastating events. De Kretser wants us to think about the pleasures of travel as well as it's underlying purpose and meaning. The novel is written with almost alternating chapters about Laura and Ravi over 40 years of separate travels until finally their paths cross as colleagues in a publishing house in Sydney. Is the connectedness of modern life an improvement over the rootedness of old? This is one of many profound questions that is left for the reader to answer.

The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton is a wonderful book of journey and discovery. It is a large book but don't let that put you of cause you won't be able to put it down. The journey has gone through the generations and it is know the grand daughter who makes some interesting discoveries.
